Neveah ot Yawriats (Seeking My Sweet Satan)

So I actually was putting together a post full of outrage at current events when something else caught my third eye. Julia was watching this ridiculous show about the devil when they started talking about backmasking and thenitwit host started saying really silly things about Led Zeppelin and the song ‘Stairway to Heaven’. He even said something about how the band was a runaway success without promotion from their record company and made the bizarre assertion that there was no such thing as ‘word of mouth’ in the 70’s. The clear implication was that only Satan’s Power could account for the success of Led Zeppelin.

Then the host just started making crap up about how ‘Stairway’ has more perfectly audible backmasked phrases than any other song and other absurd assertions. Then they cut to a shot of a tape recorder and we hear things like ‘My Sweet Satan’ being sung clearly over what sounds like backwards music with transcriptions of the ‘lyrics’. However, it’s not ‘Stairway to Heaven’ being played backwards; it’s just some guy singing what some deluded zealot claimed they heard in the song. It was a stunningly baldfaced deception but when you actually play the song backwards it becomes obvious why this show had to engage in fakery; because there is no ‘backmasked’ message to be found in ‘Stairway to Heaven’.

I’m very familiar with what ‘Stairway to Heaven’ sounds like backwards; it’s on my Ipod. I have a friend who is a little bit different and several years ago he put together an EP he called ‘The Backwards Suite’ that had ‘Stairway’ as well as ‘A Day in the Life’ and ‘Another One Bites the Dust’ recorded backwards. I was toying with the idea of using the backwards ‘Stairway’ as a soundtrack for an animation piece to open a play I had written, and as a result listened to the track repeatedly. I’ve never heard any of the ‘messages’ that are asserted to be in there, and it’s clear that the producers of this show felt the same way as they went through the trouble of faking it.

This sort of thing is not a mistake. The sound man didn’t slip and accidentally record someone pretending to sing backwards about how awesome the devil is. Of course, ‘Paranormal TV’ is a show produced for entertainment’s sake that shouldn’t be expected to have any integrity and debunking myths isn’t nearly as popular as perpetuating them. People like to have their bubbles of illusion left intact.

That’s why I’m a big fan of this site: http://deathpanels.org

  1. It’s obvious the musicians that were behind the Yardbirds had no real connections in the music world, or the talent to put together arguably the most powerful rock group in the world.

No way, had to be satan.
